Dear Parents/Carers, Friends and members of the Prospect High School community,
It gives me great pleasure to write a report for the first newsletter of Term 4. I hope all families had a relaxing and rejuvenating break. We have begun a busy term of learning activities and extra-curricular activities. Welcome to new staff members, Dr Leonard Van Mourik Broekman and Mr Zac Saville who will replace Ms Carolyn Smith while on leave and welcome back to Mrs Tatiana Hinds who will be working with the International students. Welcome also to Teacher Assistants Braydon Groeneveld and Leona Lee who are joining us for increased hours this term and to Asiyeh Heidari who will work with our EAL students. Congratulations to Mr Mario Bergamin and Mrs Vivienne Webb who were acknowledged for 25 years of service with the Department for Education, Children and Young People. Congratulations also to Mr Jacob Willard who has won the role of permanent Laboratory Technician.
Uniform
It’s been very pleasing to see the most students wearing school uniform. The Prospect High School Association has endorsed its’ support for school uniform. All students need to remember that when leaving our school, correct uniform is compulsory. School uniform items can be purchased from our uniform shop. Please note hoodies, coloured or embroidered socks, caps and skins/tights are not items of the Prospect High School uniform and students will be asked not to wear them and for parents to purchase correct items. Plain black shoes are the required footwear. It is important for students to be always dressed correctly.
Please see the list of Prospect High School uniform items below. These are available for purchase at the school office.
Failure to wear correct uniform could result in consequences which may include loss of privileges and/or loss of participation in and/or attendance at school functions.
Please contact your child’s Grade Leadership team if you have any questions or need support with uniform.
Parent Information Session - Thursday 3rd November 6pm
Prospect High School will be holding a workshop for parents providing clarity around the way we are using language and actions to support students in wellbeing, participation, and engagement. Cassie Kitani from Real Schools has been working in partnership with Prospect High School sharing research and practical strategies to build resilience, confidence, conflict resolutions skills, relationship building skills and a sense of community with our young people. I highly recommend Cassie’s parent workshop as it will strengthen the understanding between school and home and provide clarity of how Prospect High School is working towards being a restorative school. The workshop will be held in the library commencing at 6pm.
World Teachers Day is 28 October
Today is World Teachers Day, a day to recognise and acknowledge the work of all teachers. I am very impressed with the team of teachers at Prospect High School and feel very fortunate to work with such excellent practitioners. Their support and care of students often extends beyond the classroom, and they have shown great resilience and leadership over the past few years. To celebrate World Teachers’ Day this year, the SLB organised a morning tea.
School Association meeting
The first School Association meeting for Term 4 will be held on Tuesday 1st November in the Nest Café at 5pm. Agenda items for this meeting include uniform and student behaviour management policy. We aim to work closely in partnership with our families and school community and attendance at these meetings is one way that parents can have an input into decision making. New members are welcome.
Student Free Day Friday 3rd November
Next Friday students are not required to attend school. Teachers will be spending time unpacking the new Australian Curriculum in preparation for 2023. Students are also not required to attend on Monday 7th of November as this is a long weekend.
In conclusion, congratulations to the Inter-High swimming team who came second, narrowly missing first place at the Div 1 NHSSA Inter-High carnival yesterday. All team members made an awesome effort to achieve this wonderful result. Well done to individual team members Aadyn, Georgia and Abi who achieved a personal best and to Zoe who broke the record for grade 10 girls 50m freestyle.
Kind regards
Lee Barker
Principal

Parent Information Evening- Real Schools
Dear Parent/Guardian,
A key component of our teaching and learning focus at Prospect High School is on student wellbeing and engagement in learning. Cassie Kitani from Real Schools has been working in partnership with Prospect High School sharing research and practical strategies to build resilience, confidence, conflict resolutions skills, relationship building skills and a sense of community with our young people. Cassie’s overview will provide clarity around the way we are using language and actions to support students in wellbeing, participation and engagement. I highly recommend Cassie’s parent workshop as it will strengthen the understanding between school and home and provide clarity of how Prospect High School is working towards being a restorative school.
We look forward to seeing you at this important session.
Please complete the short microsoft form to register for the event:
Read LessOn Wednesday a group of Year 10 and 11 Hands on Hospitality students went to Ritual Coffee to see first hand the coffee roasting process. We also had the chance to participate in a “cupping process” where freshly ground beans are placed in a cup, water at 96 degrees C is poured over and we smell the aroma. After which we tasted the brews and with both senses tried to identify their flavour profiles. Jesse then talked about the coffee company and their operations and what it takes to be a superior roaster and wholesaler.
We are very grateful for the experience and thank Jesse and his team from Ritual Coffee for their time and assistance with our program.

New Lunch Special at the Nest Cafe
St John Ambulance First Aid Program
In week 1 of term 4 all Grade 7 and 8 students participated in a First Aid program run by St John Ambulance.
The fun, interactive, hands on and practical first aid session gave students the confidence to act in an emergency through easy to follow step-by-step plans. Through this program St John Ambulance Tasmania is reaching its goal of making first aid part of every Tasmanian’s life.
This week, Grade 10 science students completed their chemistry unit learning about neutralisation reactions by performing titrations. Students added an acid of unknown concentration to a base, using a colour indicator to observe when pH 7 (neutral) was achieved. Once the volume of acid added was known, the concentration of the acid was calculated.
Inter High Athletics Carnival - Team Selection
In Term 1 we held our annual Athletics Carnival, a number of students were affected by COVID and unable to compete.
To make the Inter High team selection fair and reasonable, the HPE team have decided to give those students affected the opportunity to try out for the team. These students should speak to their HPE teacher ASAP, these try outs will occur in PE lessons over the next 2 weeks.
