Welcome to Secondary Education at Prospect High School

Our school has approximately 565 students from years 7 to 12 and is situated in the city of Launceston, Tasmania.

The symbol for Prospect High School is the eagle and our uniform is based around the colours of green and gold. Students are expected to wear their uniform with pride and represent the school positively in the community.

Prospect High School was established in 1965 and has a long tradition of high achievement across all endeavours.  Our mission statement is, ‘preparing students for effective participation in the world of their time”. We pride ourselves on excellent learning and career programs that prepare students for a successful future.

Prospect High School teaching and non-teaching staff work collaboratively to develop strong, respectful relationships and a safe, orderly and supportive environment where students are well known. The school has a rich and diverse culture and includes a significant number of International and EAL students.

We pride ourselves on the quality pedagogy and intervention/extension programs for literacy and numeracy. As a result, Prospect High School was acknowledged as one of the top 10 schools in Tasmania for achieving improvement with NAPLAN results continuously over a period of five years. Prospect High School was acknowledged as being the most improved secondary school in the Launceston region. We currently have excellent ratings with Year 9 results exceeding Tasmanian mean scores in all domains – reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation and numeracy.

All teachers have high expectations for student learning and behaviour and offer inclusive and rich teaching and learning programs. Teachers of all subjects have a focus on improving learning outcomes for students and deal with behaviour in a respectful and restorative manner.

A selection of learning programs that utilise resources in the local community have been developed in recent years. These include mountain bike riding, catering and hospitality and STEM. Japanese is offered in Years 7-10 and this subject together with Hospitality, Catering and Tourism are areas of speciality offered in Years 11 and 12. There has also been development with curriculum offerings in Health and Physical Education and sporting events, resulting in increased participation and success in Northern and State sporting events.

The development of leadership skills and leadership opportunities for students are wide and varied. As well as opportunities within the school, student leaders work closely with our associated primary schools and local community.

Prospect High School has a very strong Arts program and provides students opportunities to participate in school productions, local and state competitions and Arts evenings.

Each year we look forward to upholding our high expectations of improvement and excellence.
