In remote Communities across Australia there are often no libraries or bookstores. Access to reading material is extremely limited and this impacts the achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. The Indigenous Literacy Foundation is a national book industry charity working with these remote Communities to support reading and learning. Through ILF’s programs, books are gifted, some translated into First Languages, and others are created by Communities. ILF have gifted 636,100 books to date, to hundreds of schools, health care centres and service organisations and reached over 400 remote Communities across Australia, including Cape Barron Island.
As part of the Book Week celebrations the library held a Great Book Swap, a major fundraiser for the foundation and raised $141.50. Thank you to those who donated and purchased books during the week.
