Principal's Report

Dear Parents, Students and Friends of Prospect High School,

Congratulations

Well done to the 2020 SLB members and SLB Co-ordinator Mr Scott Brewer for their outstanding effort with Relay for Life fundraising. All were very disappointed that the event was cancelled this year, however, they still managed to raise over $5000 to support the Cancer Council Tasmania. I am delighted to announce that Prospect High School has won the Council of Tasmania Champions of Hope Shield that is awarded to the school which raises the most money for Relay for Life. There will be a presentation of the shield soon. Congratulations.

School Chaplain

Prospect High School was successful gaining funding for the school chaplaincy program.  Thanks to the School Association for their support. Mr Sam Cogger has commenced in this role. Last Tuesday we said "farewell" and "thanks" to Pete Garwood who won a position at Deloraine High School. Pete has made a significant contribution over the last 11 years working closely with families, staff and students. His friendship and support has been greatly appreciated by all. We wish him well.

Staff Success

We are very proud of the achievements of Mrs Sharon Locke who achieved third place in the 2020 MTBA Cross-Country Olympic (XCO) National Championships (Mountain Bike) held in Bright, Victoria in the Masters 5 category 50-54. Mrs Locke has been training rigorously for months and paid tribute to her coach in gaining 3rd place. The race was very competitive and challenging. Congratulations.

In support of the Premier’s announcement earlier this morning, where ever possible parents are asked to keep their children at home from Monday 30th March. Prospect High School will be open next week for children of essential workers.

Coronavirus Risk Management

In an effort to keep Prospect High School safe, I ask that families encourage children to:

  • Cover any coughs or sneezes by coughing or sneezing into their elbow,
  • Wash hands often, especially after coughing, sneezing and nose blowing.
  • Be kept at home if they become unwell.
  • Adopt social distancing measures of 1.5m
  • Refrain from social events, gatherings, sleepovers, visiting shops/shopping centres

If you or your child have come into contact with a confirmed case, please call the Tasmanian Public Health Hotline on 1800 671 738 for further advice.

Please note Prospect High School is closed to external visitors (including parents) and contractors, apart from those involved in essential visits, eg. the delivery of essential services.

General updates

  • There will be no NAPLAN this year.
  • The School Association AGM and General Meeting have been postponed.
  • School levies and camp fees that have been paid will be reimbursed.  Please do not contact the school regarding this.  Please refer to the article in this newsletter.
  • Term 2 commences on Monday April 27th.

Online Learning

In accordance with directions from the Tasmanian government and Department of Education, Prospect High School teachers will be providing learning from the online learning platform called Canvas in all subjects. This will be a trial so we can see what needs to be modified in readiness for delivery in Term 2.

Teachers have been working collaboratively to prepare for online learning and are excited by the opportunities Canvas can offer. I have been impressed with the flexibility and adaptability and courage shown by teachers, who have responded quickly and confidently to the new demands of the online learning provision.

I would personally like to the Prospect High School community for the way that they have transitioned to this new way of learning.

I am conscious that this way of learning may well be overwhelming for parents and students, as it is for me and many teachers. I want to reassure you that it is a new experience for us all and we may not get it right and it may not be perfect for a long time. We will be delivering learning at a slower pace and students are encouraged to have a go and do their best. The pandemic is an unprecedented event, and while learning is important, I hope that families use this time to focus on self-care as well as education. Parents do not have to become teachers. However, I would like you to support and encourage your child/ren to spend time on education. I also would like to acknowledge there are many learning opportunities in everyday life that your child will be experiencing.

I encourage families to be patient and understanding of one another as the pandemic may go on for some time. It is also important for parents to be talking to their children about how we will get through this and that there is a positive future in sight.

I would like to thank all staff for their hard work and commitment this term. The strong relationships developed and quality learning opportunities provided, have ensured engaged learning has taken place and has helped us navigate through the weeks of uncertainty in a smooth manner.

To all families, I know the pandemic has caused strain, in particular financial and emotional. It will pass in time, but we all have to work together on this and follow the restrictions and rules put in place by the government. However, most importantly, we have to care for and be kind to one another.

As this is the final newsletter for the term, I would like to wish students and their families a safe and relaxing holiday and look forward to working with you in Term 2.
